How Dual N-Back Works
Two streams. One brain. Watch how it works, then try it yourself.
What Is Dual N-Back?
You see squares flash on a grid and hear letters spoken aloud. Your job is to remember what happened N trials ago and press a button when something repeats. "Dual" means you track both at the same time.
Track Positions
A square lights up on a 3x3 grid. Remember where it appeared — if the position matches 2 trials back, press the Position button.

Track Letters
A letter is spoken aloud each trial. Same rule — if the letter matches 2 trials back, press the Audio button.

Do Both at Once
Now track position and audio simultaneously. They're independent — one can match while the other doesn't. This is what makes dual n-back effective.

How You Progress
The app adjusts difficulty after each session. Do well and it gradually increases. Struggle and it eases back. You'll advance from 2-back to 3-back, 4-back, and beyond.
Classic mode uses integer N-back levels (N=2, N=3, etc.) — the same standard protocol from the original research. Pro's Adaptive mode shows your level as N.DD — like 2.45 — where the decimal shows fine-grained progress within each level.
